Welch Healthcare & Retirement Group Assisted Living Communities Highlight Heart Health Month
Duxbury, MA (PRWEB) January 31, 2012
February is National Heart Health Month, and seniors can take heart in knowing that the heart benefits greatly from healthy lifestyle choices no matter what your age. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death and a major cause of disability in our country. Heart health is a priority for Massachusetts-based Welch Healthcare & Retirement Group’s Allerton House Assisted Living Communities located along Boston’s South Shore. Although heart disease risk does increase with age, it is possible to decrease that risk by living an active, healthy lifestyle.
Several tips toward living an active, heart-healthy lifestyle include:
Working as a partner with your healthcare providers to manage your health. Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol increase the risk of heart disease, so managing your overall health decreases heart disease risk. Be sure to take your medications as prescribed by your physician, too.
Stay or get active. Being physically active improves heart health. Talk with your healthcare provider about which activities are safe for you, then choose the ones you enjoy the most. Walking, gardening, golfing, a group or chair exercise class—anything that involves movement—will do your heart good. Always consult your personal medical provider before beginning any fitness regimen.
Fuel your body with a heart-healthy diet. The more fruits and vegetables, the better. Choose lean meats and low- or no-fat dairy products. Limit saturated fats and foods/drinks with added sugars. Choose lower-sodium foods, and limit alcohol consumption to no more than one beverage per day if you are a woman and no more than two if you are a man.
Do not smoke or expose yourself to second-hand-smoke.
Identify stressors in your life and find ways to eliminate them. Many people find that exercise alleviates stress. Other known stress relievers include mediation, breathing exercises, yoga and staying socially engaged.
During February several of the Welch Group’s senior assisted living residences are holding special Heart-Healthy presentations. These free educational forums are designed to educate seniors and their adult children about the signs and symptoms of cardiovascular disease, the latest treatment trends and research, prevention strategies and ways diet and exercise can improve heart health.
