Kansas City Homes & Gardens magazine awarded Lisa Schmitz Interior Design with the 2011 Remodel of the Year Grand Winner. Schmitz specializes in high-end modern residential interior design, worked closely with Treanor Architects, the firm tasked with developing the remodel plans for a home located in the Lake Alvamar area of Lawrence, Kan.

A distinct feature throughout the remodeled home is the custom cabinetry designed by Schmitz. This includes full-height custom cabinetry in the kitchen with pullout pantry, deep drawer storage, a concealed T.V. cabinet and a built-in coffee station. The remaining kitchen perimeter is without any upper cabinets, making the room open and filled with light. It includes a custom designed full-height tile backslash consisting of six shades and textures of subway glass tiles.

One of the highlights includes a 10’ cabinet, designed by Schmitz to separate the kitchen from the great room. The cabinet eliminates the need for a railing, and defines the two areas. Made of solid walnut planks wrapped with Corian, this cabinet is a statement piece, yet durable for entertaining and everyday use. It includes a custom walnut T.V. cabinet and shelving with a concrete hearth and stone from the exterior extending onto the fireplace.

Schmitz’s high-end modern sensibility is evident in the master bedroom. Soft sheer drapery lines the full length of the walls while a layer of motorized black out shades to block out sunlight. Plus, blackout shades lower with the touch of a button to give privacy or to darken the room for sleeping. And for the best feature, Schmitz added a custom bed with attached nightstands, which hides a T.V. in the foot board, which can be raised and lowered by remote control.

In the library, which was formerly a split-level, the space was opened into a single voluminous library, lined with bespoke walnut shelves and desks.

The renovated master bathroom is lined travertine stone and glass mosaic tiles. Amenities include heated floors, a deep whirlpool tub and an open shower with body sprays. Glass shower corners let light shine in. Thick Kansas Plaza Gray Limestone counters support vessel sinks.

“Though the transformation was incredible, the clients were conscience of re-using as much of the existing materials as possible,” said Schmitz. “Many of the existing appliances were re-used in the new adjacent pool house. Wood beams from the original construction were saved and used in other areas. As much as possible, items were salvaged and donated to Habitat Re-Store.”

Schmitz has extensive residential and corporate interior design experience. Some of her interior design projects include corporate facilities, medical facilities and restaurants. Schmitz has been a guest columnist for Design Notebook in The Kansas City Star Magazine since 2009.
