1962 Shasta travel trailer restored by Richard and Vicky Nash

A true classic car buff, Richard Nash never imagined that he would be restoring 1960s era travel trailers. His wife, Vicky brought home the first vintage trailer in 2005 and so the obsession began. Four trailers have made their way to the Nash driveway. The fully rebuilt 1962 Shasta Airflyte is the gem of the collection.

If not purchased for $ 100 by the Nashes, the 13 foot 1962 Shasta’s fate was sure to be the local dump. A flat tire, broken jack, dilapidated interior, split seams, leaking roof, damaged siding were just a few of the problems to deal with. But being the visionaries that they are, this Colorado couple could see the true potential. A custom home-builder by trade, Richard knows construction. So the demolition began and every inch was stripped down to the frame. The original parts were used as a template to painstakingly rebuild nearly every piece from the ground up. Much of the trim, hardware, and glass was salvaged and reused. A beautiful ash wood, coated with about 5 gallons of amber shellac was used for the interior walls, ceiling and cabinetry. Shiny new aluminum cut to the exact dimensions adorn the roof and side panels. The coveted original silver wings proudly fly on the back.

Vicky served as Creative Director, selecting the red, silver, white and black color scheme. A trip to the paint shop highlighted the famous Z pattern on the exterior. A diner theme carries through the interior space. Cool retro-looking fabric was selected for the cushions and coordinating curtains. Formica countertops and tables feature a boomerang pattern which complements the black-and-white checkerboard floor.

Nine months (and $ 10,000 in materials) later, the completed 1962 made its debut. Reminiscent of a peppermint stick, she was named Candy. Candy has made many appearances at a variety of classic car shows and vintage travel trailer rallies in Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. Sometimes she is accompanied by collector cars like a 1968 Ford Mustang. A true show-stopper, Candy won the Ladies’ Choice Award and also the People’s Choice Award in respective years at the Grand River Classic Car Show in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. She was also pictured on the front page of the Moab Times Independent newspaper.

To complete the ensemble, Richard located a 1961 Ford Galaxy Sunliner convertible which he envisioned pulling the vintage camper. This full restoration included an engine and transmission overhaul, brakes, shocks, black-and-white upholstery, fresh chrome, a new soft top, a matching paint job in Ford Candy Apple Red, and a new hitch with electronic brake control.

“When we drive around with the 1962 Shasta, people smile and give us the ‘thumbs up’ signal all the time. Everyone wants to know what year it is and what it looks like inside,” says Richard.

This hobby began when Vicky read a magazine article about Sisters On The Fly, a group of women who travel around the country together in antique trailers painted with colorful murals. “I thought that looked like so much fun. And I didn’t even camp!” exclaims Vicky. So she started searching for a trailer and found a 1970 Shasta hunting trailer with camouflage curtains for sale in Denver. Fortunately, Richard was a good sport and agreed to help fix it up. Even though there was some hail damage to the top and back, the trailer was in decent shape. It underwent a cosmetic transformation. When it went on the road, it was a big hit. So the Nashes were hooked. However, their preference was the more rounded “canned ham” style trailers so they sold the 1970 box version and began the hunt for an earlier model.

Since the completion of the 1962, a 1961 Shasta has joined the fleet. Richard was about to embark on a new home construction project so needed an onsite office. As luck would have it, he came upon a 16 foot Shasta (sans wings) for sale. So with a fresh coat of black and white paint, the trailer was retrofitted with a computer desk and drafting table complete with filing cabinets, refrigerator and microwave.

It is true that once people are enamored with vintage trailers, they can never own just one. Somehow a 1968 Serro Scotty has also made its way to the Nash residence. They are thinking of turning that into a gardening shed for the backyard. Or perhaps it could be a custom order to sell to another trailer junkie.

Moving Into New Storage Condo

Eucalyptus at Beaumont is poised to provide needed owned RV storage for some of the 3,500 RVs that may be evicted from Orange County California.

The El Toro Marine Base (MCAS) was closed in 1999, and the abandoned runways soon morphed into the nations largest RV storage lot. In July of 2005, Lennar Corp purchased the Marine Base to make way for new housing and the Orange County Great Park. Lennar and its subset, Fivepoint Communities, secured needed construction financing and broke ground on the first of over 10,000 homes and 1 million sq ft of commercial development on January 31st, 2012. The stored 3500 RV’s are right in the path of the construction. The RV’s may have to go away. Possibly far away.

“Where will all those RVs go”? Said Ted Deits, developer of Eucalyptus at Beaumont lamented a unique condominium (individually owned) storage project. It is going to be a real problem. There is little available storage in the Orange County area suited for large vehicles like RVs, and land is simply too expensive and rare to make economic sense for RV storage. Cities do not like non-revenue (sales tax) generating uses. After approaching 15 cities in Orange County before settling here in Beaumont, I was turned down by every city even though they all had ordinances against parking RVs in residential areas. None of them would allow the construction of an RV storage lot. Sort of a NIMBY [not in my back yard] attitude.” Deits continued, “A recent example is the city of Huntington Beach, where on June 21st, 2010, they voted unanimously against a RV storage project that would have stored over 557 RVs. (Video of meeting here.) Some businesses have rented large warehouses and have started storing RVs clustered inside. The cost is prohibitive from $ 10 to $ 14 per foot, (4 times the cost at El Toro), and this solution is temporary at best. Further I am not certain how effective the fire protection is.” Deits said, “If one RV catches fire, they all catch fire.”

“Certainly the cost of RV storage will increase dramatically, especially in the Orange County areas,” said Deits. “It is already occurring as the word of this calamity gets out. Sales at Eucalyptus at Beaumont have increased 4 fold in the last 2 months. We are running out of garages and this is before any of the RV’s have even been asked to move. Once the RV owners get their eviction notices, it will be every man for himself.”

The prospects for building any new RV storage projects are very unlikely as Orange County land is too expensive, and frankly, for small developers, construction financing is non existent in this challenged economy. The remaining storage operators will pretty much have a monopoly and will charge accordingly. It is simply supply and demand. Too much demand, too little supply equals higher prices. The remaining RV storage operators will have their payday soon. Ted Deits said, “I built Eucalyptus at Beaumont to allow for the individual ownership of enclosed RV storage. I saw this coming in 2003 when I conceived the idea. People are going to have to control their storage costs if they are going to continue to enjoy the RV lifestyle. Owning your storage has always made sense, now more than ever.”

Why should I buy a service contract if a car comes with a manufacturers warranty?

There are over 10,000 components on a vehicle; a manufacturers warranty covers only a fraction of these parts.

A manufacturers warranty does not cover steering, electrical, suspension, air conditioning, heating, fuel systems, brakes, and convenience packages such as a navigation system.
Manufacturer’s warranties are based upon defects in material and workmanship and do not cover normal wear-and-tear.

What does an automobile extended warranty typically include?

Comprehensive bumper-to-bumper coverage, including the exhaust system, electrical system, the engine, gas tank, the heater and air conditioner, normal wear and tear, the leather seats and the sunroof, etc.
Regular maintenance
Access to pre-qualified, professional auto technicians
Twenty-four hour technical assistance
Roadside assistance such as towing

Should I Buy an extended warranties for a used car?

Buyers of used motor vehicles need the protections offered by extended vehicle warranties for essentially the same reason that new cars buyers do – to cover repairs not included in a manufacturers limited warranty and to continue protection after the warranty runs out.
Extended Warranties are not insurance. Most dealers offer minimal coverage (at least 30 days) for used vehicles to cover basic repairs but you are responsible for purchasing an extended warranty if you want to cover the cost of repairs beyond any manufacturer’s warranty.
There are only a few comprehensive warranty programs that will cover the full cost of repairs on your used vehicle. Some of those programs have a high deductible that requires you to pay for a portion of the work upfront.

How are claims handled?

Nearly 10 million automobile extended service contracts are sold annually, and approximately 95 percent of claims submitted to SCIC member companies are resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
A consumer may be able to choose among several service dealers or authorized repair centers. In some cases, the consumer must return the vehicle to the selling dealer for service.
     Many service contracts are backed by A+ rated insurers, who provide additional financial solvency on long-term contracts.
As with most laws, there may be exemptions from certain requirements. It is important for consumers to research the company offering the service contract as well as any insurer backing it.

Consumer Obligations:

Read the contract provisions carefully and understand all coverage and exclusions
Keep detailed records, including contract paperwork, receipts, and maintenance records
Adhere to all manufacturer’s recommendations for routine maintenance, such as oil and spark plug changes. Failure to do so could void the contract.
Identify the name of the service contract provider on the contract. If a contract does not list an administrator’s contact information, contact your state Department of Insurance or the Better Business Bureau to determine if the company is authorized to do business in your state.

Consumer Tips:

Most service contracts cover normal wear-and-tear and may fill in coverage gaps in the manufacturer’s warranty for up to 7 years and/or 100,000 miles
In many states, service contracts come with a “free look” period, usually 30 days. If a consumer believes they acted impetuously, the contract can be return for a full refund during this period.
Do not buy a service contract if the provider will not supply you with a copy of the contract terms and conditions prior to purchase.
Be alert to service contract providers who use unsolicited mass marketing techniques, such as direct mail and telemarketing (e.g. “robo-calls”).

Prevent Chimney Problems with Liners

FAIRFIELD, Iowa – The threat of chimney fires or carbon monoxide poisonings from deteriorating masonry chimneys can be reduced with the installation of a stainless steel chimney liner, according to HomeSaver, Inc., the Fairfield, Iowa-based maker of chimney liners, chimney caps and fireplace dampers for residential use.

When these conditions exist, problems can occur, such as carbon monoxide seeping into the living structure of a home, or sparks from a fire that escape through the crack in a chimney wall into a flammable part of the house. Even prolonged exposure to the heat from flue gases leaking through cracked or broken clay liners can poses significant threat to combustible material near the chimney. Additionally, an unexpected chimney fire can spread through a breech in an unlined chimney scattering fire throughout the home.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), clay flue tiles within a chimney should be replaced if they are cracked, broken, or missing.
