Extreme Makeover: Home Edition uses Affectiva Q Sensor to Help Soldier

The Affectiva Q Sensor is used to help evaluate treatments for veterans with PTSD

Waltham, MA (PRWEB) November 10, 2011

MIT spin-off Affectiva, the leader in emotion measurement technologies, donated a wireless biosensor to assist Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in helping out the Hill family of Ottawa, Kans. The episode first aired on Nov. 4.

Staff Sergeant Allen Hill was almost killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq and suffers from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Extreme Makeover: Home Edition used the Q Sensor wristband as part of an alert system to monitor Sergeant Hill’s stress signals and send a text message when they reach a threshold. That way he can know when it’s a good time to go to the home’s unique quiet room, which is equipped with large screens for calming images, a special calming chair with speakers for soothing sounds and an aroma-therapy device for pleasant smells.

“We were moved and honored by Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’s request for a Q Sensor to help a soldier’s family and to shine a spotlight on the challenge facing veterans with PTSD.” said Affectiva CEO Dave Berman. “We join Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in saluting all military families.”

Affectiva’s Q Sensor is a wrist-worn biometric sensor in use at leading universities and corporations to track excitement, engagement, stress and anxiety. It measures emotional arousal via skin conductance, a form of electrodermal activity that grows higher during states such as excitement, attention or anxiety and lower during states such as boredom or relaxation. The sensor also measures temperature and activity.
