Scranton, PA (PRWEB) August 15, 2011

EarthBox®, maker of the world’s most popular self-watering growing container, has announced its support of World Food Day with the creation of the EarthBox World Food Day School Kit.

In 1981, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations introduced World Food Day (observed on October 16) to alleviate hunger and promote food security. This year is the 30th anniversary of World Food Day, and 450 sponsors and communities all over world are participating. EarthBox has created a special EarthBox World Food Day School Kit that includes romaine lettuce seeds, a seed-starter kit, a CD that contains educational activities for students, and more. The EarthBox World Food Day School Kit can be incorporated into classroom learning to coincide with World Food Day, or it can be used anytime during the year.

By using the EarthBox World Food Day School Kit along with an EarthBox Ready-to-Grow System (which includes the actual EarthBox container), a school classroom can grow a crop of romaine lettuce and learn about the importance of food security.

“The more classrooms and students that participate in World Food Day events and activities, the bigger the impact will be in promoting food security and food supplies,” said Molly Philbin, Education Director for EarthBox. “Our goal is to get students and teachers involved in a very hands-on way in growing food, which can ultimately help to feed the world.”

Parents and community supporters are encouraged to donate an EarthBox World Food Day School Kit to a local classroom. Teachers and educators are encouraged to incorporate the EarthBox World Food Day School Kit curriculum into their classroom activities to introduce horticulture as a way of understanding global geography, health and hunger, and other cultural issues.

“An EarthBox World Food Day School Kit combined with an EarthBox container makes it economical, easy and academically enriching for a classroom teacher to join the World Food Day campaign and make the world a better place—one classroom at a time,” said Philbin. “Plus, teachers can use EarthBox materials throughout the year to teach horticulture, nutrition, social studies and other topics.”

The EarthBox World Food Day School Kit and EarthBox Ready-to-Grow System can be purchased from a participating school distributor (Carolina Biological, Fisher Science Education or NASCO). For more information visit http://www.earthbox.com/educational/world-food-day/
